Vase with Gladioli and China Asters, 1886

Vincent van Gogh moved to Paris in 1886 to live with his brother Theo.

Vincent was mentally stable when he first moved to Paris and this is reflected in his use of bright colors.  He loved the study of still life and flowers were a regular subject matter.

Theo was his younger brother by four years and his most ardent supporter.  He never gave up on his older brother.

Theo died when he was 33 and only six months after Vincent died.  The official cause of death was dementia, but most scholars agree it was really profound sadness.
